The "fix" is probably simple.   The knowledge required to determine
the simple fix, is not. :-)

First of all, you found out what happens when you take one 
of my guesses and try it. :-)

Is your cf partition really 57 MB?  How much memory do you have?
Were you really using initrd on the system that worked?

initrd is "interesting"... (I read the document)
