Snippet from a bug report I did on the 1.4 series:

I suggest you learn another language - you could be investing in a
technology that will leave you in the lurch.  This is a problem for
the managers to resolve, but I think Java might be a poor solution.
There are non-Sun implementations of Java/JVM, but at various stages
of readiness.

I occasionally use Java on a 486/66 with 16 Mb ram, and found it
not a particularly pleasent experience - lots of swapping required.
