I scanned my systems for a file "modules.rc" (And just now, the
Web.)  There isn't any such file.   I think you meant "rc.modules".
And this is what I did, I made an rc.modules, and it works.   The 
modprobe thing was to make sure I knew how to do that, in case I 
ever build a system that has a lot of modules or has a changing 
configuration.  And I have other Linux systems to mess with, too.

Yes, I saw this in the network script, and indeed, if the associated
config file is present and the card is live it will bring it up.
