I think you are missing usb-storage. I have one and it works great, I just
"mount /dev/sda1 /mnt" and it finds all dependencies on RH7.2

Here is the driver stack I have loaded:

usb-core
usb-uhci (this drives the USB chip - you may need OHCI)
scsi-mod
ide-scsi

Note, this is under Redhat 7.3...but the same stack was being used
under Mandrake 8.0 and below.
