swap problem

I'm having a problem booting a 0.53 system.  It gets to where the
RAMDISK: compressed image found message is displayed, then it just starts
spitting out the following messages:

VM: do_try_to_free_pages failed for swapper...
VM: do_try_to_free_pages failed for kswapd...

What am I doing wrong now?
